BLOG 207: FACE YOGA POSES FOR EACH STAGE OF YOUR MENSTRUAL CYCLEMar 20, 2023
Face Yoga can be done at any time of the month. In fact, I highly recommend doing at least a few minutes daily, ideally 10-30 minutes if you can. A combination of facial exercises, facial massage, facial acupressure and relaxation each day works really well. However, if you have a monthly cycle, there are a few types of Face Yoga and some specific poses which you can focus on to help enhance your wellness at each stage of your menstrual cycle.
Remember that even if you no longer have a cycle, Face Yoga is great to do daily but I wanted to recommend a few aspects of Face Yoga you can dive into to help you honour your monthly rhythm if you are menstruating.
MENSTRUATION (WHILST YOU ARE BLEEDING, NORMALLY 3-7 DAYS)
During this time it’s wonderful to use facial acupressure to nurture yourself. It’s a very gentle and slow way of lightly touching your skin plus has deeper wellness benefits which are perfect for this point in your cycle.
All acupressure works beautifully during this time but this point is a particularly good tonic for helping you to reduce stress, reduce headaches and migraines and feel a sense of overall wellness.
Place your index finger between your eyebrows and breathe deeply for 30 seconds. Then massage in one direction and then the other for 30 seconds.
FOLLICULAR (AFTER YOUR PERIOD HAS FINISHED)
This is a lovely time to do facial massage to bring the glow back to your skin. It will help you build a connection with yourself and see an instant natural face lift.
This is a very simple yet effective facial massage to help boost blood circulation, smooth lines on your forehead and reduce expression lines forming.
Place your fingers on the centre of your forehead and gently move them away from each other to smooth out your forehead. Lift off and start again, Do this 30-60 times.
OVULATION (WHEN YOU ARE OVULATING AND USUALLY THE TIME WHEN YOUR ENERGY IS AT ITS PEAK)
During this time you will naturally want to move more and do stronger exercises so doing facial exercises during this time is great for toning your muscles.
This technique combines facial exercise with facial massage for a wonderful glow.
Make your mouth into an ‘O’ shape with your lips curled around your teeth. Then use two fingers and smooth upwards from your jaw to your nose. Lift off and do the massage again whilst holding your mouth in that position for 30 seconds.
LUTEAL (THE BUILD UP TO YOUR PERIOD)
During this pre-menstrual time you may find your energy is low, your emotions are heightened and everything feels more stressful during this time. Therefore doing deep breathing to regulate your emotions is so helpful for calming your central nervous system, balancing your hormones and reducing stress on your face.
Breathe in through your nose for a count of 4 and let your abdomen rise. Breathe out through your nose for a count of 6 and let your abdomen lower. Repeat until you feel calm in mind, body and face.
